Interview with a filmmaker: “ Mattia Tognoni” the director of the short movie “Senility”

1.Tell us about your movie, where did the idea of this movie come from?

The idea was born seeing the life of my grandparents with the worsening of an illness, so I decided to ask them to act in this short film. My grandfather was already quite ill at that time and unfortunately he died not long ago. Thanks to them I was able to realize this work, which contains a part of that life, not through a documentary but a narration.

2.Tell us about yourself, your education, your experience. We would like to know you better.

I’m 24 years old student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Italy. I attended art school, from where I started making some videos of various kinds. Over time I made some commissioned videos, but Senility is my first narrative short film, which I started making in 2020.

3.Has this film been previously appeared in any other festivals? If so, which festivals?

Yes, it was:

GRAND OFF – WORLD

INDIPENDENT SHORT FILM

AWARDS (Poland)

Cefalù Film Festival (Italy)

Kimera International Film Festival

(Italy)

Barcellona Indie Filmmakers Festival

Onirica Film Festival (Italy)

4.How have you discovered members of your team and how do you keep the relationship with them strong?

This short film is a small independent production. I already knew all the team members. I hope to maintain relations for a new project like this one.

5.How do you usually get funding for your films?

As I said, it is my first project of this kind, all the funds and resources to produce it have been from me and from all those who have participated. I hope that this design allows me to make something with a production.

6.How did you hear about Tehran Short Film Festival? How familiar are you with Iranian cinema?

I saw your festival on filmfreeway, it seemed like a great festival so I decided to try to participate. I know the cinema of Abbas Kirostami, which I really appreciate. I’ve seen some Iranian films but I’m not an expert.
